Designing Brand Experiences

How AFTERHOURS crafted its visual identity.
Creating a brand identity for a concept as ethereal as 'the night' presented a unique design challenge. We needed to avoid the cliché tropes of moons, stars, and literal darkness, aiming instead to capture a feeling—the specific, electrified atmosphere that exists between midnight and dawn. The AFTERHOURS visual identity is built on tension: the contrast between deep, consuming blacks and sharp, vibrant neon accents that cut through the darkness like a strobe light in a smoke-filled room.
Our typography choices reflect this duality. We utilize stark, highly legible sans-serif fonts that feel engineered and precise, contrasting them with blurred, kinetic motion graphics that evoke the disorienting, fluid nature of late-night experiences. Every visual element, from the packaging of our products to the layout of our digital platform, is designed to feel immersive and slightly mysterious. It shouldn't reveal everything at first glance; it should invite the user to lean in and explore.
The color palette was perhaps the most crucial element. We eschewed traditional 'nighttime' colors in favor of a core foundation of absolute black, punctuated by 'Electric Citrus,' 'Midnight Cherry,' and 'Neon Berry.' These aren't just colors; they are energetic states, designed to evoke the heightened sensory perception that often accompanies sleep deprivation and adrenaline. The resulting brand experience is unapologetic, bold, and entirely native to the hours it celebrates.
